Game, set, match for Scudamore
Premier League top bod Richard Scudamore is short-sighted in his assessment of the Premiership’s future. League football was created to find the country’s best team and by playing an extra game, the Premiership will lose its status of being one of the world’s best. With three or more relegation threatened teams facing a last-day decider, a draw to see who plays whom should not decide the outcome. Similarly, the uphoria of winning a Premiership title shouldn’t be tainted by allegations of ‘they had an easier game’ or ‘we had further to travel’.
The current system is fair and it works. The Premiership is one of the most entertaining leagues in the world, attracting the finest footballers from all corners and change isn’t needed. The gap between the Premier League and the country’s smaller sides is increasing week after week, perhaps it’s about time the top men in football turned their attention to this deepening crisis instead of trying to line their pockets more than they already do now.
